Event Details

We are in the middle of a media revolution.  As new genres appear, we are compelled to rethink questions about literacy and what it means to be literate in today's world.  Growing in popularity, graphic novels are great tools to help reluctant and seasoned readers alike learn to make meaning through words and images, yet a stigma still surrounds using graphic novels in the classroom.  Participants will focus on "finding the literary" in graphic novels through discussion and analysis and will create their own theories about graphic novel authors' literary techniques.  This presentation grows out of work done during the Oakland Writing Project's Summer Institute and was also presented at the Michigan Council of Teachers of English Annual Autumn Assembly.  Location: Room 108
